Royal warrant holder and award-winning luxury bedmaker, Hypnos, is celebrating receiving carbon neutral status for the seventh year running.

Hypnos was the first carbon neutral bedmaker in the world and is the only bed manufacturer to have held this prestigious award for seven years. This accolade endorses its commitment to responsible manufacturing as part of its wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

As a family-run company, sustainability is at the heart of Hypnos’ beliefs and it takes immense pride in its accountable approach to business by producing handcrafted beds that are genuinely green and responsible.

Its handmade philosophy also ensures Hypnos is using skilled craftsman and not power-driven machines to create its luxury, bespoke beds. This in turn helps to achieve its overall carbon reduction targets. In addition, all of its beds are 100% recyclable, so no Hypnos bed ever has to go to landfill.

This, along with its other CSR activities, have meant that since 2011, the company has reduced its carbon emissions by almost 70%.

Chris Ward, Group Marketing Director at Hypnos, explained: “We have robust carbon offsetting programmes in the UK and overseas, which enables us to meet our sustainability targets.

“Since 2011, we have offset a total of 5,905 tonnes of CO2. We have planted 600 trees in schools within our community and have supported Green Energy projects in Africa, as well as deforestation projects in Brazil.

“Sustainability drives everything we do as a business and is very much engrained in our day-to-day philosophy and we’re incredibly proud to have achieved carbon neutral status again. We work incredibly hard to ensure we operate the business in an environmentally-friendly way as possible, whether that’s through the use of a biomass boiler at our Castle Donington site, or by creating sustainable beds and mattresses made from natural materials. Indeed, Hypnos continues to lead the bed industry achieving not only the PAS 2060 Carbon Neutrality standard but ensuring Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Compliance, Life Cycle Analysis and the development of rigorous Environmental Management Systems.

“To be the only bed manufacturer to have held this highly desirable accolade for seven consecutive years is an incredible feat and we’re so proud of all the work that has gone into this achievement.”

Most recently Hypnos has offset carbon emissions through a UK schools tree donation and planting project, which saw it plant around 200 trees - the equivalent to 200 tonnes - at Hughenden Primary School in High Wycombe. On an international scale, it also supports a clean water project in Uganda to repair broken boreholes to ensure that the primary supply of water is clean. This means less trees are cut down to fuel the fires that would normally be lit to boil the water, making it safe to drink.

Hypnos’ sustainable credentials don’t stop there. The company’s carbon neutral status forms part of its overall CSR strategy which includes pledging a minimum of one per cent of its Group profits to national and local good causes by holding regular fundraising activities at both of its UK manufacturing sites in Princes Risborough and Castle Donington.

As a family run business, Hypnos has strong ethics at its core and also supports Magic Breakfast as its national charity partner. This cause provides healthy breakfasts and expert support to young children and schools in disadvantaged areas of the UK. In addition to a recent company donation of £10,000, Hypnos staff have raised £22,000 through various fundraising initiatives, including a charity bicycle ride from its site in Castle Donington, Derbyshire, to its head office in Princes Risborough.

Further to this, Hypnos has recently donated 20 beds to Great Ormond Street Hospital and other children’s charities, and actively supports Young Enterprise and Apprenticeship programmes.

Chris Ward, added: “As a family-run business, Hypnos takes its CSR and sustainability responsibilities extremely seriously. For everyone at the company, sustainability is paramount and we are always striving to do more and to meet the stringent demands set down by the Royal Warrant Holders’ Association (RWHA).
