Care and Frequently Asked Questions

The below lists our recommendations for care for your contract mattress and bed. Alternatively download a copy of our Bed Care Guidelines leaflet.

Please refer to our "Frequently Asked Questions" for additional advice information relating to contract beds.

Use a Suitable Supportive Base

Do not use a new Hypnos mattress with an old divan base – an imperfect base or mismatch could result in premature wear and invalidate the guarantee.

Where a bedstead with a slat system is being used, ensure that the slats are not more than 3 inches (approx 7.5cm) apart. If a wider gap exists between the slats, it is recommended that a ‘bedstead mattress base’ be used between the bedstead and mattress. Failure to take such action may result in accelerated wear on the mattress and even damage to the spring unit.

It should be noted that bedsteads may produce varying comfort levels according to the resilience in the slats or support system – this is obviously beyond our control.

Mattress Protection

We strongly recommend the use of a good quality cotton-faced mattress protector under your bed linen to avoid stains and soiling, thereby promoting good hygiene.

If you wish to use the moisture impermeable type of mattress protector then we recommend the polyurethane backed breathable type, with terry toweling top surface. This ensures maximum protection without any ‘over-heat’ discomfort.

Turning and Rotating Your Mattress

The majority of Hypnos contract mattresses are upholstered with fillings on both sides hence require a Seasonal Turn (every three months).  Turning the mattress over and rotating end-to-end periodically will allow even wear and tear across the whole surface on both sides of the mattress.

Regular turning is essential to the comfort and to avoid over-use and damage to any one part of the mattress.  Each Hypnos mattress includes sewn-in ‘Mattress Turning Guide’ labels to help maintain this quarterly turning and rotating cycle i.e.  Turn and rotate the mattress in January, April, July and October.

Remember a Hypnos mattress can be heavy, so seek assistance when turning and rotating your mattress.

In the case of zip and link mattresses please unfasten the mattress before turning and rotating.

Cleaning

Clean your bed every other month with a soft brush to keep it clear of dust and fluff – avoid the use of a vacuum cleaner as this may unduly disturb the upholstery fillings.

Treat stains and spills immediately using dry towels or paper towels.

Do not attempt to spot clean the mattress by any wet or damp means. Do not use detergents or chemical cleaners as this may bleach or damage the fabric. Both these actions would inhibit the effectiveness of the Fire Retardant Crib 5 properties which are essential to meet legal standards and insurance criteria.

Urinary saturation does damage the mattress and where this occurs the mattress should be discarded.

Handling Your Mattress

Never attempt to fold or roll your mattress, even for a short period of time, as this will permanently distort the peripheral edge wires, essential to its shape and structural integrity.

Your mattress is designed and constructed for use only in a flat position.

The only exception is a sofa bed mattress.

Usage and Maintenance

From time to time you should also check that all screws, castors, feet, linking bars and the headboard are secure.
